Jazz Appreciation Month: Louis Armstrong

"Louis Armstrong"

April is here…and what I love about April is the litany of things to celebrate — like jazz and poetry. When I think about jazz, one of the first artists who comes to mind is Louis Armstrong — a man who truly shaped the face of jazz…and who also gave birth to scat.  He is the first of my jazz and poetry portraits for the month of April.

If you have a chance to listen to his recordings with Ella Fitzgerald, you’re in for a treat! The mutual admiration, respect, and love, permeates throughout the recordings.  You can also catch Louis Armstrong in several films including Hello Dolly, High Society,  as well as the James Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, singing the theme song “We Have All The Time In The World.”

I painted Louis in red, white, and blue, simply because he said (and believed) he was born on the 4th of July.

Thank you, Satchmo! We salute you! Happy Jazz Appreciation Month!
